     Maggotery is the act of producing maggots in large quantity (100kg and above) with the intention of using it as a supplement for poultry feed production and fish feed. Maggots are highly proteinous with high nutrient content that facilitates the the growth of farm animals.

Anyone can produce maggots but where the problem lies is how to harvest. In this article I am going to take it step by step on the production and harvesting of maggots.

• Maggots as Supplement for Fish Meal.

Maggots can be used to replace fish meal in poultry feed production. The use of maggots as fish feed, reduces cost of production, thereby increasing profit. Feeding chicken with maggots facilitates their growth. Maggots are more proteinous than fish, a 25kg bag of fish meal in the market now is ₦17,000. That is to say that for every one ton of feed produced, with maggots being replaced with fish meal, ₦17,000 is saved. The use of maggots to replace fish meal is very economical, maximizes profit and brings good returns to the farmer. The aim of a farmer is to make profit, that is why a farmer will always make use of any profitable method in farming.

 Maggots as Feed for Fishes

 Maggots are used to feed fishes. This equally decreases cost of production, thereby increasing profit. The maggots are being given to the fishes either raw or preserved. Fish floaten feeds are very costly in the market, high cos of floaten feed is one of the constraints to fish farming. Farmers find it difficult to maximize profit after spending very much in buying fish feed for six months. In other to maximize profit, farmers are advised to start producing maggots in order to supplement the floaten feed being given to the fish. Maggots are highly proteinous, it has been proven that maggots can effectively serve as supplements for fish feed. The use of maggots as fish feed reduces cos of production thereby increasing profit. In Demaco Optimum Services, one of the biggest farm in Enugu State Nigeria, maggots are being used as supplements for fish feed. It has also been proven in that particular farm that the use of maggots as supplements for fish feed quickens growth of fish. Many farms in Nigeria and and other countries use maggots to feed their fish. Maggot production is very easy but its harvesting is highly technical. Some of the various sections in farming such as fishery is capital intensive, so people say that if you don't have enough money, you better don't embark in fish farming. But that idea has been proven wrong, because maggots which are freely got are now used for to feed fish, which equally reduces cost of production.

After harvesting of maggots, the next step is to preserve the maggots because much is being produced and the fishes cannot finish the whole maggots produced on that very day. Get a frying pan, prepare your coal or gas or anything that can be used as a source of heat. 

Place the frying pan on top of the heater, pour the maggots inside the frying pan (the quantity to be poured inside the frying pan depends on the capacity of the frying pan) then start frying until it is dry.

After frying with heater, please do not package, the next step is to sun-dry. Sun-drying takes 4-5 days depending on the amount of heat, therefore sun-dry until the dry process is done (i.e until the moisture content is reduced to its lowest, where it can be crushed by a crusher).
